Explorers From France
Giovanni da Verrazano
France paid for Giovanni da Verrazano’s journey in 1524. Verrazano was sent to map America’s coast and to find a route through to Asia. He mapped from present day North Carolina, north to Newfoundland, but never found a path to Asia. He also explored the east coast of North America including Virginia, New York Harbor, and Narrangansett Bay

Jacques Cartier
Jacques Cartier’s voyage was funded by France. In 1534, he sailed past Newfoundland and entered the St. Lawrence River. After his next two trips, France decided to stop sending out explorers and funding their journeys. Over the course of the two trips, Cartier discovered present day Canada.
